      <type>content description</type>
<value>'Sir / The report that was given to me of the picture in question came from more than one person of veracity - my father on my request has seen it since and confirms me in what I heard before - / however in consequence of a promise made to him by some gentleman of the counsil to engage the author to Efface the figure of the Woman siting presenting a [?]trompet I shall be satisfyd - but that same figure must be totally destroyd - and no other put in its place - otherwise I shall persist in my former resolution to have my own pictures home - I have the honour to be with true Respect / Sir / you most obliged humble / Servant Angelica Kauffmann / Tuesday'

Refers to Nathaniel Hone's painting of 1755 'The Pictorial Conjuror, displaying the Whole Art of Optical Deception' in which there was reported to be a naked figure that resembled Kauffmann. The Academy appointed Chambers to act as intermediary in the matter. Hone denied painting a likeness, but painted out the figure, as Kauffmann requests in this letter. The Academy Council voted to withdraw the painting and Hone exhibited it with other work in a room on St Martin's Lane.

The fragment contains a valediction in French with 'Autograph of Angelica Kauffman[sic]' in another hand on the verso and in graphite on the support paper.</value>
