The top edge is cut and part of the sampler is missing; the other edges are turned under and stitched.  The sampler is divided into 22 horizontal bands of repeat border patterns, an alphabet, and in addition a wide pictorial band depicting a pastoral scene, including three trees with a male and female figure, sheep, a lamb and two dogs, and the dates '1709' and '1718', with the inscription ' these works in hand my frinds /  may have /  when if in grave am laid /  is deelin place and christ is my salvation / o lord I am not puft in mind I / have no cornful eye I do not / exercise myself in things that / be to high but as the child that /  wained is even from his mothe / rs breast so have I lord behav /  myself in silence and in rest o / israel trust in the lord let him / be all thy stay from this time /  forth for ever more from age / to age I say 1718. /   with what god sends let us /  contented rest a little is a /  nuf if truly blesst 1709'.
