DESCRIPTIVE DATA

object type: Woollen sampler embroidered with silk and wool thread in cross-stitch.  There is a double blue line selvedge at the to and bottom; the sides are hemmed.  A repeating border pattern surrounds the sampler.  At the top there are two kneeling figures placed either side of an arch with flowering rose sprays.  Beneath this is a version of the Ten Commandments: 'THE/Ten Commandments/From Sinai thus the Lord to Israel Spoke/Twas I that freed thy neck from Egypts yoke/ Have ye no other Gods but only me  Before no helples/Idol Bow thy Knee.  Thou shalt not take Gods holy name/In vain.  nor thou not thine the Sabbath day Prophane/Honour thy parents that thou long mayst Live.  Thou/Shalt not kill nor take the Life I give Pollute thy soul/  With no Adulterous one Stain.  thou shalt not steal For/Curst is the Lawless Gain.  With Candour judge false/Witness bear gainst none.  Nor envying covet what is/Not thine own'.  This inscription is followed by the Lord's Prayer and another inscription which reads 'This Sampler Done by me Iane Iefferis In The Year/Of Our LORD. 1799 February Aged 9 Years and/2 months'.  On either side of the final line there are hearts and lozenges motifs.
