object type: Bordered sampler, linen, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, eyelet hole and satin stitch.  The sampler is bordered by a narrow band of satin stitch; within this sits another border with a chevron design.  The central part of the sampler is divided into six horizontal sections, which include alphabets, Roman numerals, the inscriptions: 'Persevere. Be not weary in well doing', ' youth in society are the flowers/Blown in their native bed: 'tis these alone/Their faculties expanded in full bloom/Shine out there only reach their proper use', (inside a wreath) 'Wrought b Lydia J Cotton, aged 9 years, Augst 27 1819'and 'Love learning and improve'. Floral sprays fill the corner spaces.
