object type: Linen band sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in cross-stitch with a few backstitches.  All the edges are hemmed.  The sampler is divided into horizontal bands, the lower half taken up almost exclusively by alphabets, in addition to some geometric pattern repeats and a double flower vine.  The top three bands contain pictorial motifs.  The first band depicts a lion, a two-headed eagle, a duck, a Pelican in her piety, a squirrel and a parrot.  The second band is worked in detached motifs, including flowerpots, a lantern and baskets arranged around a central motif of two female figures flanking either side of a well.  The third and widest of the bands depicts Jesus on the Cross with detached motifs of the Instruments of Passion, the sun, the moon stars and flowers sprigs surrounding the central motif.  The top of the cross bears the inscription 'Jesus'.
