The sampler has five colourer band sat the top, three of which have horizontal repeating floral border patterns and two with the inscription ' eLIZABeTH CLOWDe\/ HeR SAMPLeR 1678 R'.  The final 'R' belongs to the name 'CLOWDer'.  The elevn bands of whitework include geometric repeating border patterns, an alphabet and the inscription 'ABRAHAM CLOWDeR'.
