      <note>
        <value>These studies have been identified as preliminary sketches for the illustrations to George Eliot's novel 'Romola', serialised in the Cornhill Magazine from July 1862 to August 1863. Leighton was commissioned to produce twenty-five full-page designs and fourteen initial letters, thirty-eight of these being used for the two volume limited edition printed in 1880. It has not been possible to relate these studies to any particular illustration, although the baby is most probably Tessa's child.</value>
