  <description>
    <value>Cream-coloured earthenware (Queen's ware), moulded, lead-glazed, and painted in rose-purple enamel. Of rounded lozenge shape, with a partly shell-edge, rim moulded with shells, scrolls and leaves, and a shallow centre. The moulding is outlined in rose-purple, and the rim and centre are strewn with asymmetrically placed motifs: a peony spray, two sprigs of leaves, and a spray of three larger leaves.</value>

      </maker>
      <note>
        <value>The form was derived from a S&#xE8;vres soup tureen stand in the service given by Louis XV to the Duchess of Bedford in 1763 at the end of her husband's embassy to Paris to conclude the Peace at the end of the Seven Year's War. On 29 May 1765 Wedgwood wrote from London to Thomas Bentley, telling him that he had been taking patterns from it for three days. (Wedgwood MS E25-18093). Part of the border has a shell-edge, a popular moulded edging on plates and dishes. The sparse rose-purple botanical decoration might have been executed by James Bakewell, who was considered Wedgwood's best painter of botanical flowers.</value>
