Thomas Byerley wrote to Gunville on 8 October 1805, stating that Brookes (William of Hanley) or Garard could engrave the service separately in time so both were doing it, starting afresh 'for Brookes when he made his drawings had so much improved the pattern, and so much better adapted it for effect that I thought it best to sacrifice one dish which Garard had finished. Brookes has succeeded in making the Bamboo like the beautiful one on the China plate, and has so managed the light and dark parts on the border as to make it quite another thing . . . Brookes was highly pleased with the Bamboo pattern and says it is quite a new idea throughout - Shuffle has finished a plate and it is superb, he is charmed with it himself.'
