The centre is decorated with stylized foliage and flowers in Japanese style. On the rim there are three wavy sprays of similar foliage and flowers. Round the edge there is a border of hatched triangles with half flowers at intervals. The edge of the rim is lustred. Here, as on the earthenware versions, the design is transfer-printed in a yellowish-brown or ochre colour. Robin Reilly, Wedgwood, The New Illustrated Dictionary, Woodbridge, 1995, pp. 403-4, gives the earliest mention of stone china in Josiah III's 'Pottery Memos' of c. 1819, when it was already in production. He considered that the dates for the manufacture of stone china by Wedgwood, should be extended from c. 1822-5 to 1817-29, and experiments were continued as late as 1853.
