      <note>
        <value>This design, 'Japan Pattern No. 2' is of Japanese Imari origin. Here, as on the earthenware versions, the design is transfer-printed in a yellowish-brown or ochre colour. Robin Reilly, Wedgwood, The New Illustrated Dictionary, Woodbridge, 1995, pp. 403-4, gives the earliest mention of stone china in Josiah III's 'Pottery Memos' of c. 1819, when it was already in production. He considered that the dates for the manufacture of stone china by Wedgwood, should be extended from c. 1822-5 to 1817-29, and experiments were continued as late as 1853. See also Robin Reilly, Wedgwood, London, 1989, pp. 583-8, where he notes on p. 585 that regular production was not started until 1821.</value>
