Voltaire had just returned to France after an exile of nearly thirty years. A bust of the author on the stage and Mme Vestris crowned it with a wreath of laurels. However, Voltaire had already experienced a similar ceremony with the marquise de Villette and the actor Brizard in his private lodge.
