Carpeaux often portrayed working-class subjects, including fishermen, which proved popular with wealthy middle-class collectors. The young winkle gatherer portrayed here was spotted by Carpeaux whilst travelling from Dieppe to Puys, where he was taking a summer holiday in 1874. According to Carpeaux, this statuette embodied the “melancholic anxiety which the sea instills in fishermen”.
