Round case in the form of a sphere supported by the Three Graces, surmounted by a seated Cupid.Dial: The dial consists of a shallow rotating drum carry¬ing a white enamel ring dial with black markings. This has the hours I-XII twice in roman numerals, with the hours divided into quarters and five min¬utes. The half hours are marked by fleur-de-lys and the half quarters by dots. There is a fixed arrow design hour hand and a hidden minute hand within the spherical case for accurate setting.
Movement: 8 day movement striking the hours on a bell, with dead beat verge escapement and very short pen¬dulum with silk suspension.
Case: In the form of a sphere supported by figures of the Three Graces. The sphere divided in two horizontal¬ly by an opening to display the dial and enamelled dark blue with foliate ormolu mounts. It is sur¬mounted by a seated ormolu Cupid holding aloft a sheaf of arrows. The Three Graces face inwards and support the sphere with raised arms, whilst their hands hold swags of flowers which hang down and surround the figures. The base supporting them consists of a triangular block of white marble with concave sides decorated with arabesque and acanthus mounts and with three tapering feet, all in fine quality ormolu work, the figures being particularly well executed.M.3-19571accession numberM.3-1957139956priref139956urihttps://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/139956https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/139956referenceagent-149638adlib-agent-1496387376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8The Fitzwilliam MuseumGiven by Lady Mildred Fitzgeraldreferenceagent-156663adlib-agent-1566632a1ae09c-5efc-3a09-b2c8-c2b48ad55831Fitzgerald, Mildred, Lady195719571957givenEntry date: 1957-05-30178017801780circa178018001180018001800clockmakerreferenceagent-149647adlib-agent-14964776d7c1b2-644d-3b88-a046-07e300343046Anonymouscase makerreferenceagent-149647adlib-agent-14964776d7c1b2-644d-3b88-a046-07e300343046Anonymousreferenceterm-106779adlib-term-106779f0706fcd-d94c-3987-bcb5-f7f794332b6a18th Century, LateHeight?referenceterm-88735adlib-term-8873579dbb933-29b9-3641-b041-a903ecf92887table clockreferenceagent-149638adlib-agent-1496387376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8The Fitzwilliam MuseumCf.49referencepublication-6588adlib-publication-65889f0b0d2d-6c9e-3ff2-b85f-8971d1bd0c9eHighly Import¬ant French Furniture ...Clocks..Cf. p.348, pl.198 a far superior clock, of dif¬ferent design, but supported by three Graces348referencepublication-6604adlib-publication-6604d89f055b-f991-3e76-a9a7-f87700af8c9fEarly Neo-Classicism in Francereferencepublication-6600adlib-publication-66008773408a-4157-3fe7-852b-5732ab80bba2Nineteenth Century Decorative Arts, 18 and 21 March 1988referencepublication-2399adlib-publication-2399f46aa2b2-e379-3d5b-9c14-a56d29a49244The Nineteenth Centuryreferencepublication-6605adlib-publication-6605a788965d-ed26-3177-9f07-4e97b58a5d32Nineteenth Century Furniture, Decorations and Works of ArtCf. p.76, lot 314 with gilt figures and rounded ends to pedestal, illustrated p.77, both dated to c.1880p. 76-77referencepublication-6606adlib-publication-6606e3f4f2a2-dacc-34c1-aae9-b98c222a0f21Clocks, Watches, Mechanical Music & Instruments of Science and TechnologyCf. p.46-7, lot 90 another with triangular pedestal with rounded ends46-7referencepublication-6607adlib-publication-660736f805c7-5bae-30f5-bef3-45b1ceeea39bNineteenth and twentieth Century Furniture and Decorationsreferencepublication-6608adlib-publication-6608bbb6a369-941c-3550-ae22-eacfcb5136d1Important French Furniturereferenceterm-9044adlib-term-904499dcb503-1a64-3792-8a40-48eda95dd763Neoclassicalreferenceterm-88735adlib-term-8873579dbb933-29b9-3641-b041-a903ecf92887table clocktable clockThe Three Graces' Clockobject
