DESCRIPTIVE DATA
----------------
object type: Hard-paste porcelain, press-moulded, and painted overglaze in turquoise blue, yellow, green, red, brown, and black enamels. The unglazed underside has a small circular ventilation hole towards the back. The peasant is supported by a white tree stump at the back of a low white irregularly shaped base, encrusted with yellowish green ferns and a spray of turquoise-blue fig leaves. He steps forward on his left leg and has both knees slightly bent. His body is bowed by the weight of a straw coloured wicker basket, slung over his shoulders with broad black plaited straps which he supports with his left hand. On top of the basket rests a wooden coop, inside which sits a dappled hen. Under his right arm he carries a black and white kid, its fore and hind legs securely bound. He wears a large black three-cornered hat, from which his unkempt black hair hangs over his neck; a loose white shirt, open at the front; green breeches, held up by red braces; and has bare legs and feet.
