It was based on the first print of the third set of' 'Etudes prises dans le bas peuple ou les Cris de Paris', issued in 1738, engraved by the Anne Claude Philippe, comte de Caylus (1692-1765) after drawings by Edmé Bouchardon (1689-1762) , now in the British Museum. It is smaller than the first figure modelled by Peter Reinicke and Johann Joachim Kaendler after this engraving in 1744. The earliest record describes the figure as a Tyrolean holding a picture in his hand, because at the time many pedlars were Tyroleans, but several examples hold a map, unusually on this one, a map of the British Isles. Another example is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, inv.
