Description given, pp. 134-5, no. 144. 'Copper-alloy cross with slightly flaring arms, cast in one piece with a simple suspension-loop. On the face, in relief, is a representation of Christ crucified, below a tabula ansata bearing the superscription IC XC (Jesus Christ); he wears a colobium. At either end of the horizontal beam of the cross is a bust in relief; at either end of the vertical beam are twinned busts. The relief is ill-defined, either through wear or, more probably, through faulty casting. On the reverse there is a cruciform depression at the intersection of the arms of the cross, and the deliberate scratches, some of which can be read as Greek letters.' The busts on either side probably represent the Mother of God and St John the Evangelist, the other four may be the four Evangelists. Buckton notes that representations of the Crucifixion in which Christ is wearing a colobium are generally earlier than those in which he wears a loincloth. He doubts whether the depression on the back ever held a relic, although it may have been intended to hold one, because the depression is too shallow.","page":"pp. 134-5","type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"publication-1306","uid":"adlib-publication-1306","uuid":"02e99190-58c4-3c51-87fd-d17603321202"},"summary_title":"Byzantium, Treasures of Byzantine Art and Culture"},{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"publication-1307","uid":"adlib-publication-1307","uuid":"2e175f49-f4bd-32c1-b606-1f8bd5ffefb0"},"summary_title":"Collection Khanenko; Croix Image"}],"summary":{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-89908","uid":"adlib-term-89908","uuid":"00a774f7-a3fd-3f55-afe8-2b67cf265308"},"summary_title":"reliquary"}},"summary_title":"reliquary","title":[{"value":"crucifix"}],"type":{"base":"object","type":"OBJECT"}}
