        <value>The tortoise shell was carved from a turtle shell, which was heated and pressed to form the lid and base.  The portrait bust was stamped and chased and glued or pinned to the lid.  A twisted silver wire soldered round the groove in the base beneath the rim.  The silver hinge was pinned to the lid and base.</value>
