As the attitude of the latter group was widespread, the incentive for the Indians to take advantage of the opportunities forced upon the latter group by the former was slight and rarely exercised. One of the supporters enlisted by Sir Leonard Rogers, head of the Indian Medical Service, whose particular mission the school's establishment was, was Lady Minto, widow of the late Earl of Minto who had from 1905-1910 been Viceroy of India, and very much one of the traditionalist school of administration. Part of her support for the scheme was made manifest in the establishment of two scholarships and this annual prize, to be awarded in memory of the late Earl for especially outstanding medical research in the previous five years. The award was given in the form of a plaquette, of which this example is the designer's own bronze proof version; the Museum also has another in white metal.
