The Farr Medal was established, with its associated prize, in 1923
by Mr W. J. H. Whittall and the London School of Economics and Political Science, to be awarded annually to one student, being the most successful student in "The Theory and Practice of Statistics". In 1961 the LSE, as it had become, approved inclusion of Computational Methods and between 1977 and 1979 this was again reviewed and an additional School prize in Mathematics was established. In 2004 the award of the medal was finally dropped, but the prize is still given annually. The Museum must thank Mr Thomas Hewlett at the LSE for the information here presented. The medal was designed by Allan Gairdner Wyon, and this piece is a proof in bronze from his workshop; the Museum also has one in white metal.CM.32-20051accession numberCM.32-2005156551priref156551urihttps://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/156551https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/156551Bust of Wiliam Farr half right with legend in border aroundobverseWILLIAM · FARR · M·D · F·R·S · C·B / · 1807-1883 ·designLondon School of Economics coat of arms on laurel wreath with "University of London" around above and motto "RERUM COGNOSCERE CAUSAS" on banner around below, border around with legend outsidereverse·THE·LONDON·SCHOOL·OF·ECONOMICS·AND·POLITICAL·SCIENCE·+designreferenceagent-149638adlib-agent-1496387376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8The Fitzwilliam Museumreferenceagent-179128adlib-agent-17912830bb0254-63dd-3369-93a8-2f8aa7ada7e0Watson, Philip Charles200520052005-01-31givenEntry date: 2005-01-31192319231923after1923-11-151924undated119241924uncertain1924artistreferenceagent-174970adlib-agent-1749707cf26f3c-3f59-3f29-86f8-8e012afd13f2Wyon, Allan Gairdnerissuerreferenceagent-179056adlib-agent-1790563faa81da-410f-312e-aae8-1aec644469dcLondon School of Economics and Political Scienceissuerreferenceagent-179106adlib-agent-179106c6419459-9b20-3add-890c-247f4537b511Whittall, W.
