object type: Butt spike for a spear. Of steel, comprising a short round-section spike, a large knop with mouldings at either side round the centre where it is brazed, and a flaring socket with a dagged end and a seam running up one side decorated with numerous incised lines. There is a cog-like ring loose on the socket, which retains some of its original wooden haft which retains fragments of thick varnish or glue at the junction with the socket. The whole polished bright with pitting and some cracks on the socket
