Stoneware, thrown, incised and celadon-glazed. This maebyong-shaped vase has a cupped mouth (repaired), wide shoulder and flares very slightly at the base; the footring is low. The decoration is in finely incised lines and consists of a band of chrysanthemum petals on the shoulder and another around the base, and a lively peony scroll with six fully-opened blooms between. The glaze has a pale bluish celadon colour, is thinly applied, and finely crackled. Fire-clay spur-marks are visible on the footring. It may have been used for plum or wine, and would originally have had a cover, now missing. Its shape is typical of the Koryo period and is very similar to two pieces now in Boston and Washington D.C., which can be attributed to the 1150s and 1160s (Sekai Toji Zenshu, vol. 18, 1978, pls.6 and 7; for the decoration compare pls.9 and 11). To judge from the colour of the celadon glaze and the incised decoration, this vase must be a product of the Sadang-ri kilns at Kangjin (compare fragments from the kilns, ibid., pls.229 and 235).
