There is an applied grotesque mask just above the tines, and a little further up the handle there is a hinge, which is held in place by a slide with the applied female mask. The handle, which is square in cross section, is engraved on the front with scales, and on the sides with Vitruvian scrolls. The back has two thread edge borders round the handle and the tines. The finial is in the form of a lion rampant holding a shield engraved with the initial 'V'.
