      <note>
        <value>Formerly attributed to John Hoskins. This miniature has been restored, probably in the 19th century, and somewhat prettified. It appears that it was an original part of the Sotheby Collection. Resemblance in style to Hoskin's work has caused it to be attributed to that artist. It seems more likely that it is an early miniature by Alexander Cooper.</value>
