object type: Canton, the modern day Guangzhou, was the sole foriegn trading port in China from  1757 to 1842. It was the largest city and capital of the Guangdong province, located on the Southeast coast of China. This illustration depicts the 13-hongs area, the site for trading. Hong is the Cantonese phrase for company or factory, in which the foreign merchants were allowed to reside during the four-month trading season.French, British and Dutch flags are seen from left to right. The illustrations for such port scenes are usually rather objective and realistic.
