Of conical form, with concave sides, an inward-flanged outer edge and a large, circular central hole to fit over a lance. The outer edge is pierced with nineteen holes for missing lining-rivets. The edge of the central hole is pierced with three holes for the nails that attached the vamplates to a lance. One of the holes is partly concealed by a riveted patch that replaces a missing section of the edge. The vamplate is decorated with six radiating bands of etched ornament that widen towards its outer edge. The ornament consists of two columns of running foliage on a stippled and blackened ground, separated by a narrow, central band. The main bands are each enclosed by a pair of narrow plain bands from which stippled and blackened, alternating trefoils and darts project.
