The lady sits on a stool with her left foot crossed over the right. She is reading a letter hand-written in black on both sides of a long piece of paper which she holds with both hands. She has very short black hair and wears a small round hat with a narrow upturned edge, brown shoes, and a low-necked dress with voluminous slashed sleeves, and a skirt made up of swirling strips decorated with pale brown and flesh-toned stylized floral motifs. Round the waist it has a belt made up of three oval medallions on the back and three on the front, of which the central medallion of each group is larger than the others. The figure is supported on a shallow, rounded rectangular base coated with flesh-toned slip on the top, and signed in black pigment 'A.Blackman. 1957.
