His most famous work is the romantic novel, The Lady of the Camellias, on which Verdi's famous opera, La Traviata, was based. Carpeaux and Dumas were close friends. The original plaster model of the bust was made in 1872 and a marble version carved in 1873. The marble was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1874 and then given by Dumas to the Com\u00e9die Fran\u00e7aise, the State-owned theatre in Paris, where it remains today. Carpeaux gave a plaster of the bust (together with a plaster bust of Dumas' wife) to Dumas as gifts (now Mus\u00e9e d'Orsay, Paris). As with other sculptures by Carpeaux, the bust of Dumas was reproduced as an edition in both bronze and terracotta in three different size: 82cm (the height of the original model), 66cm, and 47cm. The present bronze is an example of the smallest."}],"periods":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-106853","uid":"adlib-term-106853","uuid":"25492eb4-1164-35eb-8dce-3601486f3415"},"summary_title":"19th Century"}],"places":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-120306","uid":"adlib-term-120306","uuid":"4c444129-3d8c-340f-bfbd-b4d82e5cbd17"},"hierarchies":[[{"@link":{"type":"literal"},"name":[{"value":"France"}],"summary_title":"France","type":"country"}]],"summary_title":"France"}]}]},"materials":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-40365","uid":"adlib-term-40365","uuid":"d79c75c2-da7b-3187-918e-f7a374e04005"},"summary_title":"bronze"}}],"measurements":{"dimensions":[{"dimension":"Depth","units":"cm","value":"24"},{"dimension":"Height","units":"cm","value":"45.7"},{"dimension":"Width","units":"cm","value":"33"}]},"name":[{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-23035","uid":"adlib-term-23035","uuid":"f9693b6b-2e4a-3666-acf8-973403f65fce"},"summary_title":"bust"}}],"note":[{"type":"history note","value":"The Dumas family cast."}],"owners":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"agent-149638","uid":"adlib-agent-149638","uuid":"7376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8"},"summary_title":"The Fitzwilliam Museum"}],"project":[{"@link":{"role":[{"value":"reference number"}],"type":"literal"},"name":[{"type":"name","value":"Sculpture UK"}],"summary_title":"Sculpture UK"}],"school_or_style":[{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-8399","uid":"adlib-term-8399","uuid":"6611ae15-9298-340e-8c20-9fc4c7a76bf8"},"summary_title":"French"}],"subjects":[{"@link":{"relation":"subject","type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-1609","uid":"adlib-term-1609","uuid":"84f2e5e2-0de4-3096-98b9-7bb4c12aaffd"},"summary_title":"male"},{"@link":{"type":"literal"},"name":[{"value":"male"}],"summary_title":"male"}],"summary":{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-23035","uid":"adlib-term-23035","uuid":"f9693b6b-2e4a-3666-acf8-973403f65fce"},"summary_title":"bust"}},"summary_title":"bust","techniques":[{"description":[{"value":"bronze, cast and chased"}],"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-26699","uid":"adlib-term-26699","uuid":"a385eebb-7834-3204-a17f-d9c3cd15d9b8"},"summary_title":"casting (process)"}},{"reference":{"@link":{"type":"reference"},"admin":{"id":"term-116050","uid":"adlib-term-116050","uuid":"b9d5e94b-6fe6-3ae7-a49d-d3df90ec8d02"},"summary_title":"patination"}}],"title":[{"value":"Bust of Alexandre Dumas the Younger (1824-95)"}],"type":{"base":"object","type":"OBJECT"}}
