These were used by its female owner to record the names of the 13 gentlemen with whom she danced at a ball held at Hornby Castle, Lancashire, on 27 November 1863. The feathers may have been torn during use, or have suffered pest damage before the fan arrived at the Museum – feathers are particularly susceptible to insect activity. This fan forms part of the collection of the Hon. Christopher Lennox Boyd, allocated to the Museum by H.M. Government in lieu of inheritance tax in 2015.
