IDENTIFIERS ----------- id: 206484 accession number: P.14342-R-4 DATE AUDIT ---------- created: Thursday 13 August 2015 updated: Tuesday 12 February 2019 DESCRIPTIVE DATA ---------------- object type: A printed text entitled: "Leap Year / From a work entitled Courtship, Love and Matrimony, printed in the year 1606", on buff-coloured paper affixed to lace-paper. A bowl of cut-out chromo-lithographic flowers, including violets and lily-of-the-valley on embossed paper with lace-paper border at bottom centre lifts up slightly to reveal more printed text. Sprays of leaves have been added by hand to either side on the buff-coloured paper. A small, novelty envelope with gilt and lace-paper flap at upper centre is inscribed with a hand-written inscription in blue ink: "a speedy answer will oblige" and opens to reveal a second hand-written inscription: '"Will you have me to be your wedded wife". This card was intended to be sent by a woman to a man. The inside of the card is blank. There is evidence of a maker's blindstamp at lower centre (visible from verso) but it is too faint to be decipherable. The quality and style of the design indicates Joseph Mansell as the probable manufacturer. The same design seems to have been produced in a variety of different colourways with alternative flower posies and choice of papers. title: Valentine card LICENSING --------- text license status: CC0 image license status: CC-BY-NC-SA OWNERSHIP --------- instutition: The Fitzwilliam Museum department: Paintings, Drawings and Prints creditline: Bequeathed by Dr J.
