  <description>
    <value>A valentine of white and silver embossed lace-paper with a design of an arched trellis and palm tree and other exotic foliage. Within the central arched window is a cut-out of a Baxter-process print by licensee, Joseph Mansell, known as 'The Plume'. This was one of a set of 16 images of children, eight of which were single figures, head and shoulders like this one. This image seems to have been used quite frequently by Mansell in his valentines and is seen in another Glaisher valentine, P.14418-R-7. Although neither P.14418-R-7 nor P.14342-R-33 appear to have a maker's stamp, they were almost certainly both produced by Joseph Mansell. See, _A Pictorial Catalogue of Joseph Mansell&#x2019;s Baxter Process Prints_ compiled by Michael Martin, Brian Lawrence and Roger Smith for the New Baxter Society, 2006, reproduced as no. 174, 'The Plume', p.51. A printed motto in blue ink at lower centre: 'A token of love.'. Inside is a hand-written inscription: 'Mrs Cole 1865'. P.14418-R-7 employs the same Mansell Baxter-process print with background intact and with a slightly different silvered paper design and a different motto.</value>
