    <value>Porcelain, thrown and glazed</value>
  </description>
  <description>
    <value>Tall, cylindrical jar and cover, the sides slightly softened with visible throwing ridges. On the side, about two thirds up from the base, the clay has been squeezed out into a small vertical ridge, with a vertical dab of blood red to the right and the potter&#x2019;s mark to the left. The body is coated with a shiny glaze, except the neck, which is unglazed. The cover is circular with a short straight side and a very slightly domed top, and matt glazed. The underside is slightly indented and glazed, except for a broad foot-rim.</value>

      </maker>
      <note>
        <value>Edmund de Waal (b.1964) studied English at Trinity Hall, Cambridge and ceramics in both England and Japan. An exhibition of his work, &#x2018;On White: Porcelain Stories from the Fitzwilliam Museum&#x2019;, was held at the museum from November 2013 &#x2013; February 2014. In the brochure, he explained: 'The essence of porcelain is its whiteness. But white is not a singular colour, it is a possibility. White in China means clouds and mist, egrets, paper &#x2026; mourning. Here is a compendium of whites &#x2026; .&#x2019;.</value>
      </note>
      <note>
        <value>Today, De Waal is best known for his large scale installations, which have been exhibited around the world. Much of his recent work concerns collections and collecting &#x2013; how objects are kept together, lost, stolen or dispersed. Edmund de Waal&#x2019;s interests span minimalism, architecture, music and literature; he has published several books on ceramics and a family memoir, &#x2018;The Hare with Amber Eyes&#x2019;, which has been translated into some 30 languages. In 2011 he was awarded an OBE for services to art.</value>
