  <description>
    <value>An example of one of Rimmel's series of twelve so-called 'Animated Flowers' valentines. Others included, holly as representing attachment and hawthorn as representing hope. All twelve were illustrated by French artist, Jules Ch&#xE9;ret. A delicate, lace-paper border around a large, central panel containing a chromolithograph of a young woman dressed as a white lily, with text printed in blue on the right; "lily / purity" and with the printed verse in pink ink below: "I cannot gaze on aught that wears / the beauty of the skies / or aught that in life's valley bears / the blues of Paradise ... / Sargent". The artist's name, "Ch&#xE9;ret" (Jules Ch&#xE9;ret) is printed at lower left and an illegible printed name/title at lower right, which is probably the copyright notice, 'ENT STA. HALL.' [Entered at Stationers' Hall] as the notice is printed in this position on other 'Animated Flowers' valentines by Rimmel. See the reproduction of an 'Animated Flowers' valentine at: http://www.valentinecollectors.com/rimmel/, an online exhibition of Rimmel's valentines (Date of visit to site: 17 February 2016). E. RIMMEL / PERFUMER / LONDON &amp; PARIS is blind-embossed inside a rectangular panel within the lace-paper border at lower centre. See advert for Rimmel's perfumed valentines, 1867, which describes the types of valentines produced by Rimmel at this date: http://www.fotolibra.com/gallery/490668/rimmels-perfumed-valentines/ (Date of visit to site: 17 February 2016).
