  <description>
    <value>A tinted lithograph in blue, red, green, brown and gold inks on white wove paper. A male reclining figure sits on a leaf at upper left, a winged Cupid beside him. These figures are joined by stems and leaves to a reclining female figure with a lute who sits inside a rose flower at lower centre. The design encloses printed verse: "On a bank reclining / Sick at heart repining &#x2026;". The tinting and the lithographed text is out of register. The central image and verse are surrounded by a cross-cornered lithographed bamboo frame in gold ink. The interior is blank. P.14414-R-114 is an uncoloured version of this design on a single sheet of paper which also lacks the frame. The lithograph is unsigned but is almost certainly the work of British lithographer, Edward Gilks. As Gilks emigrated to Australia in 1852, this lithograph is most likely either to have been produced during Gilks's apprenticeship in London to Thomas Dean, between 1836-1843 or prior to 1852. From a series of lithographed valentines and valentine designs by Gilks mounted together in album P.14346-R. Other valentine designs by Gilks are contained in album P.14414-R.</value>
