  <description>
    <value>A postcard-style valentine published by Marcus Ward &amp; Co. with a border of black and gold and a pink dog-rose design. A chromolithograph, positioned off-centre to the right, shows a young couple wearing regency-style dress, walking through a meadow with white Spring blossom on the trees and white flowers in the grass. The illustration is by Kate Greenaway (although unsigned) and appeared originally in a second volume of the anthology of love poetry, _The Quiver of Love - A Collection of Valentines Ancient and Modern_ which was published by Marcus Ward &amp; Co. in 1880. A much larger volume of _The Quiver of Love - A Collection of Valentines Ancient and Modern_ with illustrations by both Kate Greenaway and Walter Crane, was published in 1876. In the 1880 volume, this illustration is positioned opposite the poem, _Spring Flowers_, by A. Gaskell, which describes a couple walking arm in arm through a green meadow at Springtime. The book included three further illustrations by Greenaway, including _Love's Offering_, which was also reproduced as a valentine card. See P.14349-R-34, a valentine from the same series by Marcus Ward &amp; Co. which is positioned on the same album leaf. Printed at lower left corner: ENT. STA. HALL and at lower right corner: MARCUS WARD &amp; CO. The poem _Spring Flowers_ is printed on the verso. See notes. See Frank Staff, _The Valentine and its Origins_, pp. 106-7.</value>
