A verse hand-written in faded black ink above and below the central image and signed with initials: "How sweet is the rosebud just opening to view / Entwined with the lilly [sic] and violet blue ... F.B.". Embossed stamp at lower right: ROCK . LONDON. Inscription in graphite at lower right corner: "1/-" [1 shilling]. The inside pages are blank. The paper has previously been folded into quarters. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 18.
