IDENTIFIERS ----------- id: 215099 accession number: P.14414-R-108 DATE AUDIT ---------- created: Tuesday 14 February 2017 updated: Friday 26 January 2018 DESCRIPTIVE DATA ---------------- object type: A tinted lithograph with hand colouring on a single sheet of white wove paper. Entwining pink roses, leaves and stems create a circular frame around a lithographed verse at the centre: 'He saw thy lovely face / And filled with admiration for his brush / A sunbeam took and in the rainbow dipt …'. Inside a large pink rose at upper centre, Cupid stands at an easel painting a female portrait onto a heart-shaped canvas. The leaves of the roses are lithographed in green ink, but the overprinting is out of register. Gold paint is added to the leaves, stems and Cupid's easel. The roses and Cupid are hand-coloured. A lithographed cross-cornered bamboo frame printed in gold paint borders the central image. A more advanced design for the same valentine that is seen in P.14414-R-107, which is mounted on the same album leaf, but which does not include the lithographed bamboo frame or the tinted lithography. Although unsigned, this design is almost certainly by British lithographer, Edward Gilks and is one of a number of designs for valentines by Gilks which are mounted together as a group in album P.14414-R. As Gilks emigrated to Australia in 1852, this design is most likely to have been produced either during Gilks's apprenticeship in London to Thomas Dean, between 1836-1843 or between 1844-1850 when he was in partnership with his brother Thomas, a wood-engraver, based at 4 Fenchurch Building, Fenchurch, London. Other designs by Gilks are contained in album P.14346-R. title: Valentine card LICENSING --------- text license status: CC0 image license status: CC-BY-NC-SA OWNERSHIP --------- instutition: The Fitzwilliam Museum department: Paintings, Drawings and Prints creditline: Bequeathed by Dr J.
