IDENTIFIERS ----------- id: 215325 accession number: P.14417-R-96 DATE AUDIT ---------- created: Tuesday 14 February 2017 updated: Friday 26 January 2018 DESCRIPTIVE DATA ---------------- object type: An ornate valentine of embossed silver and white lace-paper with shaped edges and raised elements. A frame of silver and white embossed lace-paper is mounted on paper springs to a front of plain embossed paper with scalloped edges. The frame is decorated with white silk leaves at lower left and right and chromolithographed scraps at upper centre and lower centre, the latter an image of a bonfire with the printed motto: 'my Love burns'. Mounted at the centre of the frame is an oval-shaped insert of silver and white lace-paper of a design of daisies and leaves which has a central raised panel (on paper springs) of white silk printed in black ink with a poem and a frame of embossed, chromolithographed pink roses. The poem is titled; 'LOVE / Why should I blush to / own I love! / 'Tis love that rules the / realms above. / Why should I blush to say to all / That virtue holds my heart in / thrall? / Is it weakness thus to dwell / On passion that I dare not tell? / Such weakness I would over / prove - / 'Tis painful, though / 'tis sweet to / love'. The poem is by Henry Kirke White (1785-1806). A hand-written inscription in black ink on the inside right hand page at upper right, presumably written by the sender: 'Sarah'. A hand-written inscription in graphite on the album leaf below records a price: '5 /='. The price may have been transcribed from the verso of P.14417-R-96 prior to mounting, but could also have been transcribed from a handwritten MS from second-hand bookseller, R.S. Frampton found on the back fly-leaf of album P.14416-R. On it, P.14417-R-96 is listed as 'Love why should I blush' and priced at '5/0 [5 shillings]'. Glaisher bought many valentines from R.S. Frampton, especially between 1923 and 1925. Most of the Frampton MS relates to cards that are contained in album P.14416-R, but P.14417-R-96 is one of three that can be identified in album P.14417-R. title: Valentine card LICENSING --------- text license status: CC0 image license status: CC-BY-NC-SA OWNERSHIP --------- instutition: The Fitzwilliam Museum department: Paintings, Drawings and Prints creditline: Bequeathed by Dr J.
