IDENTIFIERS ----------- id: 215543 accession number: P.14598-R DATE AUDIT ---------- created: Tuesday 14 February 2017 updated: Friday 6 July 2018 DESCRIPTIVE DATA ---------------- object type: A valentine of white, embossed lace-paper with a central oval panel with a hand-coloured lithograph of a pair of lovers standing beside a garden seat. A motto is lithographed onto ribbon scrolls above and below the central image: 'Not the Gems of India's mine / Can match with my sweet Valentine'. A hand-drawn, scalloped border in red ink surrounds the image. The area of embossed lace-paper design around the central panel is hand-coloured in green watercolour with flowers coloured in pink and yellow. MEEK is stamped at lower centre. The valentine has been folded twice. An inscription written in graphite on the inside right-hand page at upper right: 'Jane Douglas, Carlisle / about 1840'. P.14598-R is one of two valentines contained inside a red envelope and which bear inscriptions relating to Jane Douglas in Carlisle. The same name and location is inscribed in the same hand inside P.14593-R, which is also contained in the same red envelope. The hand is closely comparable to that of Catherine Parsons, who arranged Glaisher's valentine collection into albums from the Autumn of 1924 through to the Summer of the following year and beyond.
