IDENTIFIERS ----------- id: 215550 accession number: P.14605-R DATE AUDIT ---------- created: Tuesday 14 February 2017 updated: Friday 26 January 2018 DESCRIPTIVE DATA ---------------- object type: A valentine, which was probably originally boxed, as it was grouped with a small collection of boxed valentines and similar in style and technique to boxed valentine, P.14608-R, but it seems likely that it was bought by Glaisher without its original box. A sheet of buff card is attached with brass split pins to the front of a folded sheet of heavy cream card with scalloped edges. The buff card is embossed in silver with a pair of bells with the motto: 'SINCERE WISHES', and around this is painted in gouache, stems of red flowers with black stamens. A length of red satin ribbon is threaded through the card at upper right. The lower right corner of the card is folded back and fastened with a pin and applied along the edge with black frosting. The scalloped edges of the cream card are applied with black frosting. Inside, a sheet of white wove paper folded in half and printed on the interior in blue ink: 'To My / Sweet / Valentine ; Thinking of My Love. / This pledge tho' small in love receive, / And more than I can say believe, / Since more of love than I can own / I feel for thee and thee alone'. An inscription on the verso written in graphite at upper centre, probably in Glaisher's hand: '1924'. The valentine was thought to have been originally contained inside a shallow white cardboard box base with collapsed sides found in the same location with other boxed valentines. However, following conservation work to repair the collapsed sides of the box it was found to be of a different size. A price of 1 shilling, '1/-', is written on the verso of the box base. title: Valentine card LICENSING --------- text license status: CC0 image license status: CC-BY-NC-SA OWNERSHIP --------- instutition: The Fitzwilliam Museum department: Paintings, Drawings and Prints creditline: Bequeathed by Dr J.
