She studied and practiced ceramics in Vienna before fleeing to London in 1938. During the war years she designed glass buttons like these for Fritz Lampl, another Viennese émigré who had re-established his firm Bimini (later known as Orplid) in London. In 1945 she developed her own business making ceramic press-moulded buttons, buckles and tableware at Albion Mews, near Hyde Park. After the war, Rie became known for her elegant stoneware and porcelain vessel forms with gentle ribbed patterns and textured surfaces and taught at Camberwell and the Royal College of Art, whilst continuing to make buttons for couture designers. Her studio has been reconstructed at the V & A Museum.referenceterm-110488adlib-term-1104884503a73a-ae49-3f4d-8814-88925dcd11a320th Century, Midreferenceterm-106216adlib-term-106216825b8379-ec94-388e-9a59-624e40c090d0literalEnglandEnglandcountryLondongreenreferenceterm-91170adlib-term-91170d49ca0b4-ccae-3039-afe0-882c186cff25glassDiametercm4referenceterm-129991adlib-term-12999193c868ca-4d3d-37b1-93d4-b1446ed12d47buttonshistory noteInherited by the donor from his father, John Simonreferenceagent-149638adlib-agent-1496387376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8The Fitzwilliam MuseumRef.131referencepublication-8484adlib-publication-84843fb4b015-e321-3460-844b-984eb8a2d1e8Lucie Rie: Modernist PotterRef.
