The surface shapes are matt orange-red, matt dark blue with a shiny dark blue centre, and natural ceramic colour circles and rounded petals of shiny amber. Her early work included slip-cast bone-china geometric forms incised with dark lines, superseded by dynamic paired slab-built forms (see C.3A & B-2004). This piece is typical of her more recent oeuvre, which explores languages of ornament from different cultures, places and periods in history, and is part of a series which takes its name from Owen Jones’ book ‘The Grammar of Ornament’, 1856. Priest draws on the saturated colours of buildings she saw on her own travels in South West India and Jones’ Indian Ornament motifs to create playful form and surface. She uses clay as a canvas on which to build richly drawn and layered surfaces of inlaid line, glaze colour and enamel decals.
