The city seal of Corfu which features an ancient Greek sailing boat, is depicted at the centre of the medallion. 'Elpis' (meaning 'Hope') was the name of the playing card factory founded on Corfu in 1873 by Gerasimos Aspiotis. The cards were designed by Gerasimos's father, Corfiot artist Nikolaos Aspiotis (1815-1891). From a complete set of 52 Greek playing cards of the Venetian type.
