Wood-engraving with a yellow tint. Death stands on a platform in the foreground, wearing the coat, sash and boots and holding the hat with a cock's feather, which identify him as a Revolutionary. He hands the sword of Justice, now labelled 'VOLKS JUSTIZ' [People's Justice], to a crowd of jostling men below the platform on the right. A figure wearing a (blacksmith's?) apron stands beside Death on the platform. He holds a flag onto which is written, 'REPU[BLIC]' and points with his left hand at the soldiers who are approaching from the left. The first two intials of the wood-engraver's surname are carved into the block and printed lower centre: 'st.'. Four verses by Robert Reinick are set out below the image. The final line of the fourth verse is a cry for 'blood': 'Blut! Blut! viel tausend kehlen schrei'n'. ['Blood!
