<value>An etched portrait of William Steers (died 1802), half length in profile facing right, wearing a short wig and a gown over a coat with three brass buttons. He places his hand on an open book of 'PSALMS'. Steers was Clerk of Great St. Mary's Church in Cambridge from 1763 until his death in 1802. Signed with artist's monogram, 'SH' below the image. Title and publication details below: 'WILLIAM STEERS. / AGED 71 / THIRTY FOUR YEARS CLARK OF St. MARYS / CAMBRIDGE. / PUB MARCH / 1798 BY S. HARDING 127 PALL MALL'. The etching is laid down on a larger sheet of thin, wove paper (height 227mm x width 222mm). An inscription in pen and ink at lower right: 'O'D.1.' references O'Donoghue, _Catalogue of Engraved British Portraits [...]_. See Notes. On the verso of the secondary support is a printed Fitzwilliam Museum label and graphite inscription relating to provenance: 'Alfred Smith 1942'. The British Museum holds an impression of the same state. See: 1873,0712.761.</value>
