<value>Portrait of Thomas Hobson, half-length, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, ruff, and cloak, and reaching into a drawstring pouch held at his waist with his right hand. A copy after an engraving by John Payne to illustrate William Granger's, _The New Wonderful Museum and extraordinary magazine being a complete repository of all the wonders, curiosities and rarities of Nature and Art_, R.S. Kirby, Paternoster Row, London, 1802, from where the plate has been taken. The plate mark is visible along upper and lower edges, but has been trimmed to left and right. Lettering above the image: 'WONDERFUL MUSEUM.' and below, 'TOBIAS HOBSON, / The Cambridge Carrier & the first man who Let out Hackney-Horses, / and from whom Originated the famous Adage / "Hobsons's Choice, that or none." / Pub. by R.S. Kirby, Paternoster-row Decr. 1-1802'. The letterpress excerpt about Hobson from _The New Wonderful Museum_ has been cut down and affixed to the left edge of the plate: 'HOBSON'S CHOICE - THAT OR NONE. / A Curious Account of Mr. TOBIAS HOBSON, the celebrated / Cambridge Carrier [...]'. On the verso of the plate, a handwritten inscription in graphite: 'From / the New Wonderful Museum & Extraordinary / Magazine by Wm Granger, vol. 1 [?] Lond. 1802 / Given by / Prof W. Boyd Dawkins / Feb 1928'.</value>
