IDENTIFIERS ----------- id: 225411 accession number: P.14802-R DATE AUDIT ---------- created: Wednesday 5 September 2018 updated: Thursday 3 January 2019 DESCRIPTIVE DATA ---------------- object type: Etching and drypoint on thin, wove paper. The head and shoulders of a man wearing a cossack-style hat and plaid cotton scarf tied in a knot around his neck. He looks out to a point over the viewer's right shoulder. The sitter is identifiable as Dutch artist, Dirk Langendÿk whose portrait Bemme etched circa 1800 after a painting by German artist Jean Baptiste Scheffer (1765-1809). An impression of this work, which is a more formal portrait of the artist within an oval medallion, is in the Fitzwilliam collection; see P.6563-R. P.14802-R is closely comparable to the design of this portrait after Scheffer but with a reversal wherein the sitter is looking in the opposite direction and with the addition of the neckerchief and hat. It is not known if Bemme produced this etching after a different portrait by Scheffer or if the modifications originated with him. See Notes. There is an etched inscription at upper left: 'J.BEmme d[..]?S / 1803'. An inscription in graphite on the verso: 'Bemme'. title: print LICENSING --------- text license status: CC0 image license status: CC-BY-NC-SA OWNERSHIP --------- instutition: The Fitzwilliam Museum department: Paintings, Drawings and Prints creditline: unknown STABLE URL ---------- url: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/225411 TECHNIQUES ---------- drypoint TECHNIQUES ---------- etching CATEGORIES ------ category: print DATING ------ creation date: 1803 - 1803 creation date earliest: 1803 creation date latest: 1803 culture: 19th Century CREATORS -------- maker: Bemme, Johannes Adriaansz.
