  <description>
    <value>Etching on paper. An unfinished proof of a design showing an alchemist wearing a fur-trimmed cap at work decanting liquids in front of a leaded-pane window to the right of the scene. Objects associated with the 'Wunderkammer' interior include the array of stuffed curiosities (crocodile, turtle etc.) hanging from the ceiling, which originated with Ferrante Imperato&#x2019;s, _Dell&#x2019;historia naturale_ vol. xxviii of 1599. The plate is unfinished in the areas of the clothes worn by the figure, the basket of flowers in the foreground and the bunches of herbs hanging from the shelves in the background. An inscription written in pen and ink in the margin at lower right: 'Etched by I. Pils.'. A graphite inscription in the margin at lower centre: '?18', which has been scribbled out. See Notes.</value>
