IDENTIFIERS ----------- id: 225420 accession number: P.14811-R DATE AUDIT ---------- created: Wednesday 5 September 2018 updated: Monday 7 January 2019 DESCRIPTIVE DATA ---------------- object type: Etching on heavy laid paper. Head and shoulders portrait of a young man, full face, with short wavy hair, a cravat around his neck and coat with two buttons visible. Scratched lettered title, artist's monogram and date at lower centre and lower right: 'John Frederick Bryant'; 'JG 1786'. This design was used as the frontispiece to the second edition of Bryant's collection of poems, _Verses by John Frederick Bryant, late Tobacco-Pipe Maker at Bristol [...]_ (1787). The British Museum holds an earlier state of this etching, 1850,1014.398, which was used as the frontispiece to the first edition of Bryant's _Verses_, which was published earlier the same year. The second state has more tone in the areas of the eyes, mouth and left shoulder, although still retains the scratched lettering along the lower margin, possibly as an intentional informality appropriate to the sitter. The later state is unlisted in O'Donoghue. title: print LICENSING --------- text license status: CC0 image license status: CC-BY-NC-SA OWNERSHIP --------- instutition: The Fitzwilliam Museum department: Paintings, Drawings and Prints creditline: unknown STABLE URL ---------- url: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/225420 TECHNIQUES ---------- etching CATEGORIES ------ category: print DATING ------ creation date: 1786 - 1786 creation date earliest: 1786 creation date latest: 1786 culture: 18th Century CREATORS -------- maker: Gooch, James
