An inscription in graphite written above the engraved title: 'Alexander Forbes of Callendar near Falkirk: Contractor for copper for the Navy'. This inscription, with the erroneous reference to 'Alexander' is repeated on the verso, along with other inscirptions in different hands: 'Alex.r Forbes of Callendar near Falkirk: Contractor for copper for the Navy; 1x-3; 1/6'. The scene relates William Forbes of Callendar, who created a fortune supplying copper to the Royal Navy.
