  <description>
    <value>Etching and engraving on laid paper. Self-portrait of Samuel Waddington (1736-1758), at the age of 21 years, three-quarter length, standing and holding palette and brushes in his left hand and a palette knife in his right. He wears a frock coat, lace cuffs and a buckled wig tied in a bow at the nape of his neck. He looks towards the left. Lettered below the image within the plate with title and coat of arms: 'Samuel [shield with ornate frame bearing three fleur de lys and horizontal band] Waddington / Painter / Aetat 21. Ao. 1757 / Ob. Dec. ye 17th 1758' and 'S. Waddington pinxit &amp; Sculp.'. The date of his death was presumably added to the plate later. Inscription in graphite relating to price at lower right corner: '2/ [2 shillings]'. Another inscription in graphite relating to price on the verso: '3/'.</value>
